Description: Sowerby made a vitro-porcelain glass with the main ingredient crylolite, a compound of hydric fluoride, water and the sodic and aluminic oxides. This made an opal glass. In addition, Sowerby added uranium dioxide to the formula to make an off-white piece that is the closest glass has ever looked as a match for porcelain. This was made for just a very short time. This matching creamer and sugar both glow under a blacklight, due to the uranium content. Every serious vaseline glass collector ought to have an example in their collection! Each piece sits on 4 delicate little feet and both are accented with a flower pattern. Both pieces are also marked with the Sowerby mark in the base. The creamer is shown in Jenny Thompson's book on pg. 61 and she lists the pattern as a registration group from 328740 to 328751, registered on Nov. 4, 1878. See also auction lot #7076 for a matching plate. ENGLISH PRESSED GLASS 1830-1900 by RAYMOND SLACK, copyright 1987.
