Description: Hard to find Southwest Nativity/Creche 10 piece set, especially one this well done. Ten pieces of a southwest theme El Nacimiento in hand painted bisque porcelain. Exquisite detail, and in the colors of the southwest with a Native American children’s theme. Joseph carrying a walking staff and holding a lamb measures 4 inches high; a kneeling Mary measures 3.5 inches high; the wise men measure 3½ - 4¼ - 4¼ respectively; the Christ Child is 2½ X 2 inches; the angel is 4 inches X 3¾ inches. The set also has a lamb, a donkey and a camel. Unmarked, maker unknown. Mint condition. In the southwest, native crèche scenes such as this are very popular.

HISTORY: With the Spanish invaders into North America in the 17th century came the Spanish Padres and their emphasis on the pageantry of the Christmas season. The Padres introduced Native Americans to the birth of Jesus and the Nativity scene. In Spanish, the word for birth or Nativity is El Nacimiento. Traditionally, the baby Jesus figure is not put into the crèche scene until Christmas Eve and the three kings are moved progressively closer to the manger until Three Kings Day/Feast of the Epiphany January 6. A wonderful idea, for it keeps the whole family, including children involved in the Christmas story.

All items are offered “AS IS”. The best “in good faith” descriptions and pictures are given, along with history, (if possible and if known) based on comparables and research available at the time of listing.
