Description: Song Dynasty Jianyao (Temmouku) Vase, caAD,

Origin: China,

Size: 10" tall, 6" widest;

A rare Chinese Song dynasty Jianyao (temmouku), zoomorphic vase. Song Jianyao kilns were famous for their thick, dark black-brown glazed wares. "Temmouku" is actually a Japanese term used for the Chinese mountain "Tianmu shan." Historians tell that the Tianmu mountain was the site of a Buddhist temple visited by Japanese Buddhist monks during the 10th century A.D. The visiting monks so prized the dark blackish-brown teaware used at the temple they asked to bring a few back to Japan where they are now displayed as national treasures.

This vase resembles a cocoon of some sorts, perhaps symbolic of silk worm cacoons, with raised "thorns" or legs. I call this a zoomorphic form. The thorns or legs are oriented in three vertical columns. The heavily potted body is composed from a course tannish-brown stoneware with a thick dark blackish-brown glaze that stops well above the footrim. Along the second "rib" the dark brown glaze was unevenly applied and appears white, (see enlargement #1). A common occurrence often seen when thick glazes are used, especially when applied on heavily textured forms like this ribbed vase. It occurs during the firing process when the applied glazes didn't completely run into the deeper folds. I personally like these imperfections. It clearly amplifies the fact about it's authenticity. Unfortunate, the vase does have some injury. A criss-crossing, hairline crack appears on one side of the vase, (see enlargement #3). Fortunately, due to the thinness of the hairline with minimal loss of glaze, the vase, if desired, can easily be repaired by any restoration professional.

Condition Consensus: Fine Condition, with criss-crossing hairline hairline cracks.
