Description:
Song Dynasty Temmoku Vase, caADOrigin: China, Size: 8-1/2" tall, 5-1/2" widest; A rare Chinese Song dynasty temmoku, zoomorphic vase. "Temmoku" is actually Japanese for the Chinese mountain "Tianmu shan." Historians tell that the Tianmu mountain was the site of a Buddhist temple visited by Japanese Buddhist monks during the 10th century. The visiting monks so prized the dark blackish-brown teaware used at the temple they asked to bring a few back to Japan where they are now displayed as national treasures. This vase resembles a cocoon of some sorts with raised "thorns" or legs. I call this a zoomorphic form. The thorns or legs are oriented in three vertical columns. The heavily potted body is composed from a course tannish-brown clay with a thick dark blackish-brown glaze that stops well above the footrim. Condition Consensus: Excellent Condition without any damage and or repair.
