Description:
Rare! A gorgeous Song dynasty "guan" Junyao meiping, ca.AD960-1279. Guan means made for the imperial or official ware. All imperial Junyao ware bears an inscribed number on its base, this one bears the number 3. Standing a slender 16.5" tall and 10" around the shoulder. The glaze is a spectacular fiery red with a green-beige undertone blushing through in small areas. This occurs during firing and is the first glaze, brown, is showing through the second runny glaze, red. The entire meiping is glazed with exception to the foot rim. The glazed inner foot rim has an inscribed number "3" character, which in one theory, which we subscribe to, denotes the imperial potter who made the pot. This theory suggests that on any given work day in the imperial kilns, these numbers are assigned to each of the 10 imperial potters working. Each completed piece is marked and hence credited to the worker who has been assigned to or chosen the number. Such inscriptions are only found on imperial JunYao pieces.b41/5
