Description: A gorgeous pocket watch case, the surfaces decorated with ornate brass-inlaid tortoise shell in the Boulle style. The interior conceals a spring-loaded holder for the watch that raises when the box is opened, and reveals a small compartment underneath. The interior is lined in copper velvet. The tortoise is beautifully colored. The top lid is edged in a border of gilt bronze with floral decoration. The brass lockplate is engraved “Vervelle ainé”, one of the most important ébénistes of the mid-19th century. Vervelle’s work graced the Restauration and Second Empire palaces throughout Paris and was avidly sought by wealthy foreigners, as well. His signed pieces are quite rare and extremely desirable.

Origin: France, ca. 1850. Condition: the top is in very good condition; the sides have some tortoise losses (fortunately that carcass underneath the tortoise is colored to match the tortoise, so the losses are not terribly noticeable upon casual examination); three of the four ebonized corner posts are partially missing; restoration could be very successful, but is not necessary for the box to have very nice decorative appeal. Size: 3-3/16” x 2-13/16” x 1-1/2”.
