Description: The contents of a mid 1800's shoemaker's shop belonging to Tobias Cole, III of Hiram, ME. Cole made shoes for the William Chase Co. of Lynn, MA and later for the Burbank Wentworth & Co. The tools were stored in the 1890's after Cole's death and were undisturbed until 2003 when they were discovered and purchased. The 200+ items in the collection include: Standing shoemakers bench w/original red paint and a lasting jack inscribed A. Baileys, Patented July, 1856, a 4 legged stool w. original black paint, a cobblers bench w/dove-tailed drawers, original blue paint and leather inset, 1 iron stand w/6 iron cobblers lasts, 1 very old iron last mounted onto a small log, 1 very old (manufacture and use of these pre-dates 1820) hollowed out tree trunk barrel used to soak taps w/yellow paint on the rim, 8 tin tap patterns, 2 lap stones, 60+ adult and children's hand carved lasts, 1 wooden pattern and 6 unknown wooden forms, 1 knee held wooden leather clamp, leather satchel w/12 numbered horn branding irons, 1 hand crank sharpening wheel w/2 extra stones, 60+ period hand tools including hammers, glazing irons, pincers, awls, knives (one with bone handle) etc, miscellaneous items including tied bundle of hog hairs, thread and beeswax ball, tin tack container w/tacks, jars of pegs, and small shaker style, oval wood box,1 set of saddlebags, 1 pair children's riding boots, 1 pair children's boots w/red leather tops, child's boots w/socks, black toddler's shoes, 1 black toddler's shoe w/a vulcanized India rubber sole, 1 pair ladies high top button shoes, 1 small beautifully carved wooden child's shoe indicative of shoemakers folk art, 1 plank board sign hand-painted "Tobias Cole - Hiram ME", and numerous papers including correspondence documenting sales and deliveries, a farm ledger, receipts, business labels, and a Maine Farm Report, all dated from 1856 to 1862.
