Description:
This Pennsylvania tall chest is from the Sheraton period and is all original. The top is beautifully dovetailed to the sides. Notice the dramatic cove molded cornice with a reed edge. The reeding is repeated at the base of the cornice. The chest has 3 side-by-side small drawers over 5 graduated drawers. The drawer fronts are mahogany. The center top drawer and 5 long drawers have their original locks and keyhole covers. The other 2 small drawers have their original hidden finger locks, which can be released by pulling out the first long drawer and reaching under to release the wooden lock. All the drawers are finely hand dovetailed with poplar being the secondary wood. Amazingly, all the stamped brass pulls are original. A couple of the drawers were missing some of their cock beading, which was replaced. The second long drawer has 2 short narrow splits in the front, which does not extend through the back. There are 2 places beneath the bottom drawer that have 1" veneer chips. They are not offensive and do not affect the integrity of the drawer. The cabinet rests on tall turned Sheraton legs. The feet are an extension of the corner boards. The sides of the chest have 2 recessed panels. The dramatic cove cornice, cherry case with mahogany fronts, tall turned legs, original finish and hardware, and Pennsylvania origins make this a very desirable Sheraton tall chest of drawers.
