Description: This classic American Set of (4) Four Arts & Crafts/Mission Style Quarter Sawn Tiger Oak Chairs was manufactured by the W. H. Gunlocke Chair Company from Wayland, New York. The design on these chairs is reminiscent of the work of Gustave Stickley who inspired the Arts & Crafts movement. The craftsman deliberately attempted to replace the more mass-produced ornate furniture styles and darker woods with warm oak and simple lines of classical furnishings carried through in understated straight lines. These chairs exemplify just that, with their sturdy well-portioned design, unadorned lines of the T- back and straight-lined legs and spreaders, and lovely quarter- sawn tiger oak. The chairs measure, 36.00” H X 17.00” W X 18.00” D, and have the original stamped W. H. Gunlocke Chair Company label.

The W. H. Gunlocke Chair Company has been in business since 1920. William Henry Gunlocke, a Binghamton wood refinisher, went to Wayland, New York to set up shop in a vacant factory building. The W. H. Gunlocke Chair Company was formed initially to produce bedroom, library, lounge, and rocker chairs. The company expanded and produced quality designs and craftsmanship due to its extensive use of steambending, a style that many manufacturers had abandoned for less costly bandsawing production. The company found a growing market in business settings and began to specialize in furniture for business and government offices, as well as schools. Woodrow Wilson became the first of a long line of presidents to use one of its chairs. William’s son, Howard, succeeded his father as company president. He instituted manufacturer's representatives and showrooms, in key buying centers across the country, an unusual move at a time when most sales were being made through catalogs and by traveling salesmen. Howard Gunlocke was still the company's chief executive in January 1969, when it was sold to the Sperry and Hutchinson Company. The company was acquired by Hon Industries, Incorporated in 1989.
