standard
5 in. (12.7 cm.) long
As cooperative workshops comprised of
highly-skilled
goldsmiths, jewelers, silversmiths and enamellers, artels were
formed in Russia towards the end of the 19th century to
compete with the larger houses such as Khlebnikov, Ovchinnikov
and Sazikov. Like Gratchev, the Third Artel was based in St.
Petersburg and known to produce Old Russian style cloisonné
enamels, although translucent enamels and gold items were
more prevalent. Active until the Revolution, the
Third Artel made kovshi (boat-shaped vessels),
picture frames, cigarette-cases, snuffboxes, pin trays, miniature
easter eggs and even clocks. Its stamp sometimes
appears alongside a Fabergé hallmark, indicating a business
relationship existed between the two enterprises.
