Description: This is a very rare, early 19th century set of 8 ladderback chairs fashioned from chestnut and having splint seats. They were handmade in New Jersey, possibly by the Demarest family of chairmakers of Bergen County. The splint seats are old but not original. The overall chair heights vary from 38" to 39.25" and the seat heights vary from 15.5" to 16.5". The handmade individuality of each chair also is evident in the slightly differing shapes of the finials and angle of the backs. This set would make a fine addition to any early 19th century home.
