Description: A set of three highly carved gilt wood scenes mounted on original wood panels. Each of the panels has been painted with the typical ironstone-red ground beneath a gold paint overlay. The panels are all deeply carved with various scenes in true three dimensional aspects. Panels of this quality are rarely found in the marketplace today. The panels are considered architectural relics and were originally featured in such things as Chinese furniture, large panels or doors at the entry way to rooms, and within the framework around the front of ornate wedding beds. There is an original signed certificate of authenticity that was issued to the original owners by Chinese officials in 1978, stating that the panels were over 100 years old. The certificate (which includes pictures of the panels) will be included with the purchase of these three carvings, if sold as a set. The description of each panel is as follows: Panel 1: 10-1/2" high x 6" wide x 1-1/2" deep. The carved portion is 1-1/4" deep, and the panel has two men together on a balcony, with pine trees and ladies standing above them on the right side of the carving. Panel 2: 10-1/2" high x 7" wide x 1-3/4" deep. The carved portion is 1-1/4" deep, and the panel reveals an official holding a fan while standing on a balcony. There are also pine trees at the top of the carving above the man as well as two ladies that appear to be staring down at him. Panel 3: 10" high x 7-3/4" wide x 2" deep. The carved portion is 1-3/4" deep, and the panel features a finely detailed mandarin on a horse with a pine tree overhead and ladies in a doorway on the other side. Date: Late 19th century. Weight: 2.13 lbs combined weight. Condition: The panels are in good overall condition with some expected wear to the gilt finish, and slight loss to wood trim on the bottom of one or more panels.
