Description: A Very Rare Set of Meissen-inspired Chinese Export Chargers, Circa 1740. Imitating Meissen Chinoiserie patterns by the workshops of Johann Gregor Horoldt & J. E. Stadler. The set is composed of a 14" diameter Porcelain Charger and a pair of 15" Chargers. Each charger with a central vignette after a Bottger-period design, depicting a Mandarin woman seated atop pillows & a woven carpet, accompanied by two servants: one standing with a palmate-shaped fan, the other offering tea to the lady. The enamel-painted design within a band of gilt interlocking scrolls at the well, itself surrounded by a gilt lattice-work pattern with interspersed vignettes of monochromatic blue & maroon, along with smaller vignettes of en grissalle decoration. An extraordinary set, unusual not only for their mimickry of an early Meissen Chinoiserie design, but also for their large size and near-pristine condition. The gilt borders, patterns and central scene executed by a talented hand, and have minimal wear/rubbing to the gilding. Reference: For the original design and examples of plates by Stadler, see Christie's sale 7126, lot 12, and Christie's sale 7075, lot 134, For similar designs by the Horoldt workshop, see Christie's sale 5632, lot 1208, and 7126, lot 63. In Excellent antique condition, without significant damage, breaks, or restoration to the porcelain bodies. Minor wear to the gilding in spots, and two chargers with 1-2 very minor rim chips. Typical of pieces of the period. These three chargers were purchased through Christies of London. Part of my personal collection. Listed in my Shop for $24,500. LOWEST PRICE IS $16,000 Measurements height: 38.1 cm (1 ft. 3 in.) second height: 35.56 cm (1 ft. 2 in.) diameter: 38.1 cm cm (1 ft. 3 in.) Please feel free to ask for additional photos.
