Manchu Qing Dynasty (c. 1644 1912) - The Qing rulers came
from outside the Great Wall, in Northeast Asia. The Qing
Dynasty was the most successful dynasty of conquest in Chinese
history, and the empire over which it ruled and laid the territorial
foundations of the modern Chinese Nation-state. The singular
achievement of the Qing was to incorporate Inner Asian and East
Asian subjects into a stable multi-ethnic empire. The PRC
Peoples Republic of China , established in 1949, is smaller than
the Qing empire at its peak by the subtraction of the
independent Republic of Mongolia.

DESCRIPTION: SEAL IN A FORM OF A PAIR OF ENTWINED
MYTHICAL BEASTS
The custom of impressing seals on paintings or calligraphy grew
in the seventh century out of working with written documents in
the palace archive. Individual written items were pasted
together to form handscrolls and by adding seals over the seams
they were, so to speak, authenticated.
This very piece is carved with a pair of entwined mythical beasts
and
phoenix
patterns and the bottom inscriptions with the meaning of a
gentleman.
