Preface. Free Masonry being a benevolent institution, and entirely insectaria, it is hardly credible that its votaries have for centuries been objects of a bitter persecution, and that large numbers of them have suffered death in defense of their principles, yet such is the case, as the Roman Catholic Church has relentlessly persecuted, tortured, and burnt them at the stake for the past six hundred years, and this persecution is still carried on, wherever popery has the power to do its bloody work.
