Description:
The Croogs of Malabar in southeast India are a fair skinned people who live in a rain forest paradise. The warrior clan, Kodovas, claim descent from Alexander the Great who invaded India in 327 B.C. They carry, and use to great effect, a unique weapon which combines the best quality of the short sword and battle axe. The ayda katti is worn at the back of the waist, secured in a belt without scabbard. Its large grip and broad pommel facilitate a good grip even when drawn in haste. The broad pommel provides a platform for the hand which greatly increases control of the stroke. This example dates to the 18th century and combines the attention to fine detail of the period with a heavy, though graceful blade retaining its original stone finish. The buffalo horn grip and pommel show some minor graining and delamination as is expected.
