Description:
This large coin silver ladle with twist handle was made in San Francisco in the 1870s by Barrett and Sherwood. It measures 13.75 inches in length and is monogrammed with "EW." It is unusual to find California coin silver. Early American coin silver was crafted from silver that met the legal standards for coinage and, because silversmiths often melted down currency to make their pieces or used old pieces that were worn out or out of style, the statement that something was coin silver guaranteed its quality to be equal to the money it came from. Often stamped Standard or Coin, this indicated the piece contained the same percentage of silver as the national coinage. In the early nineteenth century, household silver was an important part of a family's wealth.
