Description:
Samuel Freeman (1743-1831) was a Revolutionary War Patriot and a member of the 1st Provincial Congress in 1775. He later became clerk of Cumberland County, Massachusetts.
Lawsuit with separate page of judgment rendered attached. Both signed by Freeman. Freeman also signed on verso. Merchant Joshua Blake of Portland has sued William Shaw of Falmouth, Massachusetts, because Blake “…sold and delivered him said Shaw the goods, wares and merchandise (on Sept. 5, 1799) mentioned in the annexed account then and there promised…to pay him on demand as much money as said goods, wares and merchandise when sold and delivered were reasonably worth and the Plt (plaintiff) avers…Shaw has had due notice yet and Shaw has never paid said sums…”
Front sheet contains a list of cloth Shaw purchased -- $18.78 – “2 ¼ yds of black broad cloth…$12.93… 2 ¾”do. Embroidered…$5.85. Judgment $18.78.” Verso contains a listing of the plaintiff’s costs $5.45.
Expected wear. One very small hole, affecting one letter of a word in the lawsuit. Reinforced at split through one of Freeman’s signatures. Very good for a document this old and a nice piece of American history.
