ORIGINALLY $25.00!
From the research I've done, I believe this is a first edition. The story of a humble Italian button maker in New York, this work was compared to the adventures of characters as disparate as Til Ulenspiegel and Mahatma Gandhi when it was first published. Roth's first novel, it is further enhanced by 10 wonderful illustrations by Liljan. The real point of interest is in regard to the author himself, a man whose personal life probably outranked anything invented for a novel. The end of the book contains 23 pages by Dante Cacici called "Introducing the Author of Bumarap," and this is considered perhaps the most in-depth profile there is of Roth. The poet and editor began his career as a egg-candler at eight and a newsboy at ten. At the tender age of 16 he managed to land himself a job as a reporter on the New York Globe. He advanced from there as a short-story writer. He also was a bookseller, and the first illegal distillery in Greenwich Village was located in his stockroom. It was undoubtedly his endeavors as a publisher that most put him on the map, for better or worse, however. Bucking a puritanical system, Roth issued copies of scandalous works such as "A Chambermaid's Diary," and "Lady Chatterly's Lover." Cacici's short biography at the end of this book takes us only through 1947. In 1956, Roth wound up in prison for "sending obscene material through the mail," said material being a little book called "Ulysses" by one James Joyce. This book is indeed an interesting literary artifact. It is yellowed, of course, but basically in very good shape. The original owner wrote his initials, "F.K." on the flyleaf. U.S. buyer pays $3.50, which covers both insurance and shipping & handling. International buyer pays actual postage.
