Description:
Dry mounted and trimmed, then overmatted by the photographer. Signed recto on the mount below the image; Titled, dated and signed recto on the mount in pencil. Ansel Adams proclaimed Ruth Bernhard (1905-2006) the greatest photographer of the female nude. As one of the few women photographing other women, Ruth’s nudes are more about form and light than eroticism. This is the first photograph of a nude Ruth Bernhard made. While photographing objects of modern design for a Museum of Modern Art catalogue “Machine Age”, Ruth was sent a large stainless steel bowl to photograph. Her friend Peggy Boone was visiting her studio/apartment at the time, and Ruth suggested she take off her clothes and pose inside the bowl. Keywords: woman; abstract SSAL
