Description: This is a very good late 1800's to early 1900's antique set of 13 (unusual style box has room for 3/16" bit), extension lip spur auger bits with the tapered ends to fit the antique style hand brace chucks. These are all Russell Jennings pattern bits, a complete set from 4-16/16ths, (there is room for a 3/16ths size but not included in this set) and so marked,"RUSSELL JENNINGS" on the shank of most of them, a few older ones are marked "RUSSELL JENNINGS" on the tapered end shank flat. All bits are from the late 1800's to the mid-1900's era. All are sharp, and in good useable condition, a few have some minor pitting, or staining on them, none are rusty now. They are in different sizes: 4,5,6,7,8,9 on the top tray and 10, 11, 12, 13 on the middle section, and on the bottom tray 14, 15, 16/16ths. All the auger bits have the fine lead screw, all have good to very good side spurs and cutting edges. All are in useable condition. The storage case or wooden chest is made of all oak, with three compartments, one upper, one lower, one middle. The corners are all strong corner joints, in good shape. This style chest is rather rare in that the top section has room for the 3/16ths size, most begin at 4/16". This design was only used for a few years. There is some wear on the exterior finish, some small dings and scratches, minor staining, the box wood is in solid shape are corners holding, but we do note that someone has scuffed the box exterior with sandpaper that scratched it some, then applied a coat of clear varnish, you have to look at it fairly close to see it, but I thought I should mention it. The hardware is also in working condition, with some surface tarnish noted on the hinges and latches. All of the hinges and latches appear to be original, good working order, except for the top lid hinges are a little wobbly as they are only holding on by one side of the hinge joint on each of the hinges. They work fine but one needs to be careful with them. Overall a nice looking set! A very well known quality tool maker, and a nice example of their product! One of the nicer style oak chests we don't see many with the 14 sections, part of the RUSSELL JENNINGS black label is intact on the underside of the top lid. We note a small drilled start in the area of missing label on the same lid, not through the lid but noticeable.
