Description:
This is one of the earlier full-sized Royal Doulton Staffordshire figural jugs known as Rip Van Winkle. This jug has crisp features and very nice detail, painting and glazes- very expressive and lifelike. On the back of the hat is incised Rip Van Winkle. The handle, a tree branch, shows a small man resting against the branch, and a crow sitting on the top. Rip Van Winkle is a character of the Washington Irving fairy tale of the same name written in 1820. The story of Rip Van Winkle, based on legends heard from Dutch settlers is set during the Revolutionary War; the henpecked husband, Rip, wandered off on a hunt into the Catskill Mountains of New York. His adventure included meeting nine strange men drinking a magical brew and locked in a mythical bowling match. Rip Van Winkle drinks some of the brew, a fairy potion, falls asleep for 20 years, and wakes to find an unrecognizable world. This fine majolica jug has been in my family for over 35 years. This jug measures (in inches): 7 tall X 7 Wide X 5.5 Deep, and weighs 1 Lb. 12 Oz.. This item has a rim chip inside the spout, 3/8 inch X ¼ inch. Otherwise it is in good condition with no repairs or restorations. This item is sold as is, and is guaranteed as listed.
