Description: This was the earliest design by Royal Doulton of their Kingsware range 1902. The watchman was the precursor of the policeman. He patrolled the streets of the city at night carrying a lantern and staff, and calling the state of the weather and the hour. The watchman was replaced by the 'Peeler' the forerunner of the modern policeman, in 1829.
