Description: Early Victorian vanities constructed of rosewood are extremely hard to find. This is a wonderful example with beautiful detailing. The shapely mirror has a shell carved crest and swivels in its frame. Notice the finely turned knobs, which hold the mirror in the frame. The tips are ivory or bone. The base of the mirror has a deeply carved egg and dart design. The vanity top is actually walnut that has been stained to look like rosewood. We believe this is a professionally replaced top and the original was most likely an inset marble. A marble can be easily cut to replace the wood top if desired, but the current top blends in beautifully. Below is a serpentine front drawer with delicate hand dovetailing. The drawer retains its original lock and fancy brass pulls. Inside, the drawer is constructed of satinwood with small compartments and a lift out tray, a sign of high quality. The sides of the dressing table are exceptional. Notice the delicate pierced carvings and curvaceous legs. The cross stretcher is elegantly turned with boldly carved reeding. The mirror is designed to come off the base for ease in transporting. There are 2 old professionally repaired breaks on the mirror frame. They do not detract from its appeal or the integrity of its construction. The vanity has an older refinish that is in excellent condition having a rich color and patina. The graining of the rosewood is dramatic. The measurement from the floor to the top of the vanity is 31". The drawer works smoothly and the overall case is tight with no wobble. What an elegant and handsome addition to your dressing room or bedroom!
