Description:
Rococo nursing rocker in a lovely Victorian style sage green velvet tufted upholstery.
This rocker is likely a nursing rocker in that they tended to be smaller that most rockers and did not have arms so as to aid in the holding of a baby while nursing..
This piece is Rococo Style (which was a style that became popular from 1840-1970) because the carving is not subtle, it is bold and high relief. Rococo usually had carved ornamentation in the shape of roses, leaves, shells, scrolls etc. .
Also the shape of the back is in keeping with Rococo style in that it is oval rather than square or round.
This rocker nicely features a beautiful sage green velvet tufted upholstery which was also a big feature of Rococo style. The owner says that she thinks the upholstery is newer.
The legs puzzle me as they really don't fit the style, but they are unique and quite interesting nonetheless.Overall style-wise they work.
The preferred woods for Rococo were Rosewood, Mahogany and Walnut. I believe this chair is walnut.
