Description:
The History of the Discovery and Settlement of America first published 1777, was the first comprehensive book about the conquest of the New World. It remained the standard text for
decades.
Robertson begins with an essay on mankinds
ambition to seek out new lands (usually for commerce) from the Phoenecians to the great
Portuguese navigators. He then covers
his topic in exhaustive detail from Columbus (he calls him Colon) to the British conquest of Jamaica, 1655. It is mostly about the Spanish in South and Central America. Robertson has great respect for the indigenous peoples.
William Roberston, DD, (1721-1793) was a Presbytarian churchman in Scotland. He wrote histories of his native state before turning to America.
This volume, put out by Harpers in 1832, includes a biographical essay on Robertson, and questions for examining students. 570 pages + 4 pages of ads and several steel plate engravings.
Rebound in tan calf with 4 bands and some gilt in 1846.
Demi octavo. The leather is worn, for sure, and there is a water stain on the back. But the binding is in remarkable condition. Tight and unbroken. Hinges not cracked. Pages foxed
throughout. Signed in ink by owner William M Kellogg, 1840, on title page, and 1846 on attached FEP.
