Description:
This type of beer steins - tan saltglazed stoneware - is usually called "Regensburg" type, even though most of the steins of this type were manufactured in Westerwald area, far from Regensburg. These stein are more rare then the most common type of Westerwald - grey and blue saltglaze. In Germany they call them "Modell" steins because of the method of production. This particular stein was actually not made in Westerwald - the wire marks on the bottom are not common for the Westerwald stoneware. It might be that this one is a "real" Regensburg steins made in the Regensburg area around late 1870s - early 1880s. The subject of the decoration is ancient Greek or Roman characters - very nicely designed and. The lid is pewter with a porcelain inlay with a hand-painted picture of Munich Child - the symbol of the city of Munich for many centuries. The stein is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks. It is 6" tall , 0.5L capacity.
