Description:
Okay, this Red Riding Hood is the crème de' la' crème. I fell in love with her the first time I saw her. Maybe it's because I am a little crazy with all things Christmas, maybe it is because she is totally stunning!! Her dress is crisp and white as snow, her bonnet is as red and red can be! Her poinsettia's are just as fresh looking as if I had picked them off the plant today and placed them on the hem of her dress. She has no grazing, no glazing, no chips, no cracks anywhere except one little knick inside the head. She does have manufacturing flaws that I have pointed out in some pictures. A couple may be what I call "flea chips or nicks". You can tell by the feel of them when you run your finger across the surface. The ones that are smooth are from the factory and under the glaze.
She is one of the more highly sought after Red Riding Hood cookie jars; the "Poinsettia Jars". I am no expert on this but from the research I have done on her; there are 3 different sizes of flower decals. I do not know what size she has but I suspect hers are the either the larger of the three or the middle as I've seen in my research.
They have another distinguishing factor in that their heads are different than the other Red Riding Hood jars. Her head, for the Poinsettia Jars, the face is facing straight ahead and not bowing down like the other designs. The difference can be much more readily seen in a side shot. If you'd like for me to send you an email picture of the two jars I have of differing heads let me know. I will also send any and all pictures her.
A little history: She was designed by Louise E. Bauer, the patent was issued to Hull who made blanks and sent them to Royal China & Novelty Co. who then painted them. You will see a lot of these out there all stating they are made by Hull. While that is true to some degree, Hull actually produced relatively few and those were limited to the open basket design. This one I believe is a closed basket. Some of the same decals were used by Hull and Regal China, the best way to indentify is by the clay color and content. They ones by Hull are marked on the bottom "967 Hull Ware Patent Applied for Made for USA". The others like the one you see here are marked on the bottom "Pat. Des. No. 135889" USA Red Riding Hood. Other markings will say in script Little Red Riding Hood. So she, the one you see here was manufactured by Regal China. Even though most everyone who collects these will say Hull and it has been accepted by most collectors and dealers but they were mainly produced by Regal China Co.
I am saddened that I have to let her go. I hope that you will see her and fall in love with her as I did and have her placed in a protected & out of the sunlight like she has been since...oh I don't know from the looks of her she was only a showpiece. I don't believe who has ever had her before me used her for anything else but for show. Maybe I suppose you could put a baggie in her dress and have some cookies in there for Santa when he comes down the chimney to deliver your little girls Christmas. But you'd better watch out! Santa just may fall in love with her too and scant away with her and give her to his darling wife Mrs. Santa Claus. Please take care of her as I will package her up ever so gently and safely.
