Description: A rare and very fine Yuan dynasty qinghua (blue and white) "Fish" meiping, ca.1279-1368. Dimensions are 16-1/2" tall, 10" diameter (widest). This meiping is well potted, weighing a hefty 12-1/4 lbs. The jar has a tall shoulder and a short, waisted neck. The broad chest that tapers gently to a short and proportionally broad foot. The meiping has a greenish-white base ground. This is the result of the impure clay which had a higher iron content and the impure clear top glaze used during the early Yuan period. The body of the meiping is decorated in rich underglaze cobalt-blue enamel. The meiping decoration is divided into 5 distinct bands. Each band has a different theme. The shoulder is decorated with a band of scrolling peonies. Beneath that is a band of geometric patterns. The chest and main body is decorated with an aquatic scene of 3 different type of fishes and lotus plants. Below that is a band waves, peonies. And finally beneath that and above the foot rim are palm leaves with various auspicious symbols. The band with the 3 different type of fishes holds special significance. The types of 3 types of fish are: 1) Lian fish, 2) Gui fish, and 3) Nian fish. These 3 fishes, when grouped, represent a Chinese phrase "LianNianYouYu," which translates to "Every year the bearer will catch (find) riches!" The underglaze cobalt-blue exhibits variating shades of blue, from an almost transparent royal blue to an almost black irridescent midnight-blue. This was the product of the early cobalt-blue enamel which was acquired from the Middle East, the application of the enamel and the fluctuating kiln temperatures in the high-firing oxygen reducing Chinese kilns. The foot rim and foot are unglazed and exposes an orange-beige colored fine clay. There is a spot of white glaze painted on the inner foot rim which is characteristic of many early Yuan pieces. The condition consensus is in excellent condition, museum quality, without any damage or repair.

A similar period and shaped Yuan qinghua meiping, albeit with a different decoration, which was sold at auction in China 2001 for 715,000 RMB, (approx. $86,000 USD).
