Description:
Rare! A rare set of (5) Tang dynasty sancai, tomb figures, ca.618-906. Dimensions are: boy3-3/4" tall, horse 6" long, bull 6" long, camel 4-1/2" long, pig 5-1/2" long. All were excavated together from the same tomb in Shaanxi-Henan province. The set is comprised of a male human figure, bull, horse, camel and pig. The figures appear to have been first covered in a white slip, then were applied with a brown, greenish-blue and yellowish-white glazes, "sancai". The sancai glaze is heavily crackled. The clay, were exposed, appears to be beige-gray. Tomb figures as these were buried in the tombs with the deceased, in the inspiration that their spirit would be taken into the next world along with the deceased. The set is in the original condition as excavated. A truly rare find. Additional pictures can be requested by emailing us b7/5
