Description:
A rare and very fine Song dynasty DingYao porcelain pillow, ca. Dimensions are 8.25" long, 5.25" deep, 4.25" tall. This exquisite pillow is almost weighless, being made of the purist clay. The DingYao potters were masters at making beautiful thin or weightless white glazed porcelain, mostly all carved with wonderful reliefs. This pillow has a very clever and artful shape. The pillow is a 3-dimensional trapezoid that has 6-sides, with 4 corners on each planes (sides). The 6 sides are all concave and where 2 or more surfaces meet, the corners formed are the high points. Please review the images to see what I am describing. Each side (with exception of the bottom) is carved with a high-relief peonies flower. The pillow has an unctious white glaze that has a hint "feeling" of blue. The foot bottom is not glazed, revealing an orange color. The porcelain paste is so fine that it has a powdery feel to the touch. There is a large round opening at the center of the foot. This was used made to facilitate the placing inside fragrant flowers or tea leaves. This would serve to soothe the individual resting on the pillow with wonderful fragrances and pass-on pleasant dreams. The pillow is in excellent condition, museum quality, without injury or repair. b4/37
