Le Magazin Anglais
Nicholls and Plinke was one of the most popular silver firms in
Imperial Russia. It was founded in 1829 in St. Petersburg by
Willliam Plincke and Constantin Nicholls, both of English
heritage. In 1844 each received the title of hereditary honorary
citizen and
court jeweler to Emperor Nicholas I (r. 1825-55). Also known as
le Magazin
Anglais, the shop catered to a growing demand for all
things English by not only selling items from England, but also
objects made in its St. Petersburg workshop based on English
designs.
