Description:
This rare and ancient Russian cross is enameled on one side in dark blue, two shades of green, and white on silver. The top displays the Old Church Slavonic abbreviation for “King of Glory” and “Jesus Christ” above a green enamel inner cross of Golgotha. The reverse is enamelled in pale blue, yellow and black in a design of stylised foliage and flowers on white ground. Velikii Ustiug, late 17th to early 18th century. 3 1/4 x 2 1/2 in. (8.3 x 6.4 cm.). Chain not included. Velikii Ustiug, a town located four hundred miles northeast of Moscow, was a center of enamel production and enjoyed active trade with the West during the reign of Peter the Great (1682- 1725). Enamels were typically secular in nature, usually applied on copper, and often featured blue and green stylized foliage on opaque white ground. Sacred items in silver, like this example are more unusual. For more information on Ustiug enamels, see Anne Odom, Russian Enamels, London, 1996, pp. 46- 47.
