Description: A rare pinchbeck mourning brooch with black enamelling, circa 1830 with a compartment under glass for hair. The brooch is just over 1" by just over 3/4" and in excellent condition, just some minor wear to the enamel. Guaranteed to be as described. A note on pinchbeck: Pinchbeck is an alloy of metals containing copper and zinc which does not contain gold. It was invented in the 18th century by a watch case maker named Christopher Pinchbeck who carefully guarded his formula. Of course others came along and copied it but it became obsolete with the invention of gold electroplating in the 1830's. True pinchbeck will look like high carat gold but wil not test as gold at all. Gold plated items are NOT pinchbeck.
