Description:
A fine Liao dynasty glazed pottery unicorn, ca.A.D. Dimensions are 7" tall, 8-1/2" long, 3-1/4" deep. The Liao dynasty existed along the side of the Chinese late Tang and Song dynasties. Liao ceramic production centers have been found in the northern China regions of Inner Mongolia, Liaoning and Shanxi. Techniques and designs used in the Chinese ceramics industry of the Central Plains set the standard for Liao production. This work depicts a standing unicorn, (note the single horn), dressed with saddle, blanket and mounts. The unicorn is made of a red-beige clay covered with an ocra colored glaze. The glaze has over time in the burial tomb, developed a irridescent silvery inclusions in the glaze. This is diagnostic of the attributed age and is not known to have been replicated by modern methods. Condition consensus is extremely fine without any injury or repair. auc#2/52
