A rare Iron Spot Cizhou yao bowl, ca.AD13th/14th century, Late Song / Early Yuan dynasty. The sturdy tall conical stoneware bowl has an overglaze brown mottling known as Iron Spot "Tie Xu Ban" on top of the base black glaze. The Cizhou yao bowl was formed of a coarse stoneware which was first glazed with a brown glaze, and over this, is a rich and thick black glaze that stops above the foot rim, exposing the first glaze. Cizhou yao bowls historically were used by Buddhist monks for drinking tea.
