Description:
Origin: Henan, Northern China,Age/Period: ca.11th-13th century, Song Dynasty, Dimensions: 4-9/16" diameter, 3-7/8" tall, Kiln: Jianyao; A rare Iron and Oil Spotted Jianyao bowl, ca.AD11th-13th century, Song dynasty. The sturdy conical bowl has a rare splashed-on brown mottling on the inner bowl known as Iron Spot "Tie Xu Ban", along with an overall smaller, oil spotting "Shan Xi Yao". The oil spotting was an unintentional occurrence resulting from oxygen reduction during the firing process. Together, both of these characteristics makes for a fabulously beautiful effect. The Jian bowl was formed of a coarse stoneware which was first glazed with a brown glaze, and over this, is a rich and thick black glaze that stops above the foot rim, exposing the first glaze. Jianyao bowls historically were used by Buddhist monks for drinking tea. Condition Consensus: Excellent Condition, Museum Quality, with no injury or repair. b3
