Raoul Sorban Romanian Artist Signed Oil Painting 1940s
Description: Oil on paper board, framed. Signed and dated lower right corner: "R. Sorban 1942". Inscribed frame verso: "Prof. Raoul Sorban, (Bukarest) a well known painter in oil paintings - executed in 1942 in Kolozsvar (Transylvania).". Dimensions: Paper (sight): 9 x 8 1/2in. Frame: 15 x 14in. Weight: 2 lbs. Condition: Loose. Appears as though paper board had been adhered to something and then removed, leaving paper and adhesive residue verso. Small nicks to surface scattered throughout. There are two brown spots on the figure's right cheek that may be stains or may be original to the work. Otherwise in good condition overall with no evidence on inpainting when examined under u.v. light Artist's Biography:
The artist is not listed in the major art reference sources. Raoul Sorban (b. 1912). Romanian art critic and professor of art history. Professor Raoul Sorban was awarded the Righteous among Nations medal in 1987, for rescuing Hungarian and Northern Transylvanian Jews durign the Holocaust.
