Description:
ENDPAPER - Royal Air Force Spitfires engage German Messerschmitts over London in 1940 in this specially commissioned oil painting by British artist Frank Wootton. Swift and repsonsive, Spitfires were the aircraft primarily responsible for the definse of England during the Battle of Britain.
The Author - Ralph Barker served in the RAF during World War II as a wireless operator and air gunner. While in the service he wrote two books about the War - Down in the Drink and The Ship Busters. Since his retirement from the RAF in 1961 he has written 20 other non-fiction books and some 200 feature articles for the London Sunday Express.
The Consultants for The RAF at War - Robin Higham, Professor of History at Kansas State University, served in the RAF from 1943 to 1947. He is the editor of two scholarly journals, Military Affairs and Aerospace Historian, and his written serveral books on the history of British military aviation.
John McIntosh Bruce, who received a master of arts degree from the University of Edinburgh, is the author of many authoritative books and articles on historic aircraft. A former RAF pilot, he is Keeper of Aircraft and Research Studies at the RAF Museum, Hendon, London, and A fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
The Consultants for The Epic of Flight - Charles Harvard Biggs-Smith was Research Fellow at the Science Museum, London, and a Keeper-Emertius of the Victoria and Albert Meuseum, London, He wrote or edited some 20 books and numerous articles on aeronautical history. In 1978 he was the first Lindbergh Professor of Aerospace History at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington.
