Description:
Prismes, by E.A. Seguy. The identity of E. A. Seguy is a mystery to this day. Little is known about this prolific graphic artist who was active in Paris from about 1900-1925. He is sometimes called Émile-Allain Seguy, but his dates of birth and death – and even his full name - are not known. His mastery of decorative design and coloration is evident in the beautiful pochoir portfolios he created, however. Unusual in his capacity to span the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Seguy's albums remain exquisite examples of ornamentation and composition. He produced numerous portfolios of patterns, coloured with pochoir, for use by artists and designers. Designers returning to natural motifs in their spring palettes found new inspiration in the work of the mysterious French illustrator. By the 1920s, Seguy’s work showed the influence of the emerging art deco style. The abstract, geometric patterns and intense colors of Seguy’s prints were produced with the pochoir technique, in which intricately cut stencils for handcoloring were overlaid on a printed photogravure image. Though labor-intensive and therefore expensive, this was a popular technique for producing illustrations in books and periodicals, especially fashion magazines, in the early decades of the 20th century, most notably in Paris. In itself a technology exemplifying art deco through its use of aluminum and zinc—and later celluloid and other plastics—for the stencil forms, the pochoir process allowed considerable scope for varying color treatments and graphic textures.
