Description: Superb rare early 19th century American Presidential French Old Paris porcelain dinner plate used in the White House by President James Monroe 1817-1825. President James Monroe a big early American Francophile. After the War of 1812, President James Monroe moved from his home on "I" Street in Washington, DC into the newly re-furbished "Executive Mansion" White House, bringing with him many personal articles, including his gilded, monogrammed French porcelain dinner service. Marked with his monogram on the rim in a gold gilt shield , Monroe ordered this porcelain service to be personalized by adding a spectacular eagle and shield surrounded by twenty stars. Trimmed in gold, this service was used also as a complimentary service to the burgundy dessert Monroe state china. Monroe sold to the government his own personal furnishings from his home in I (Eye) Street, N.W. Included in the list of items was 1 Table set of French China, White and Gold: 286 pieces for $600.00. This dinner plate is hand painted with the American eagle with a red white and blue shield and a oval gold gilt shield. Page 291 in the Official white House china has a photo of a dinner plate just like this one. Measurements: 9" 1/8 diameter . Condition: Some wear to gold gilt.The plate has had a small chip professorially repaired at the 7 o'clock point and the gold touched up on the eagles shield. Other pieces of this service are in private collections, White House Collection, Ash Lawn-Highland, Monroe's home in Charlottesville, VA has the largest amount of this Presidential china dinner service 95 pieces and the James Monroe Museum & Memorial Library has a few pieces. Pieces of this dinner service can be seen in the catalogue "Of the newest fashion: Masterpieces of American Neo-Classical decorative arts" published by Hirschl & Adler Antiques Galleries of New York city for a exhibition they had in 2002.
