OUTSIDE SCENE – THE PRAYER OF THE BAGPIPERS
DESCRIPTION: The Romantic literary has built the image of bagpiper as vagabond, musician of square, half shepherd and half beggar, according to a reinforced stereotype that still exists. In the first half of XIX century, the compositor, Hector Belioz, in 1832, shows us the bagpipers who, shortly before Christmas, go down from the mountain in groups of 4 or 5 and come with their pipes and bagpipes to play concert before Our Lady. He so writes ( 1803 – 1869) in his memories on a journey in Italy. In his description, the extraordinary musician seems to whisper us the most suitable words to depict this scene, expressions that everyone would use to describe their portrait, that is the image that they have in their own mind. The little painting, in question, puts itself as a real devotional image and communicates the atmosphere that the musicians are able to create. They with a real devotion play traditional novena by their bagpipes, a very old instrument, its origin loses in the mists of time, we have news about these instruments already in the Bible, Nerone enjoyed playing an instrument with a bag and some sound pipes. The bagpipe, that you can find in all Southern Italy, is the result of and evolution that goes on during the centuries. The secret linked to its productions and to the musical practice have been jealously kept by the bagpipers’ families and handed down orally in generations in generations. The painting in questions shows a mountain foreshortening with high rocky needles, a typical representation of ancient tractors that led as far as the cities in order to announce Jesus Child’s birth. Two bagpipers, of different ages, stop in a solitary small temple where there s a sweet image of Madonna and carry our their devote prayer playing sweet notes.
ARTIST:There is no signature on the painting, it is considered as a production of Belgian area, probably the artist was impressed by the figure of the bagpiper so as to with to immortalize them in a painting of such a delicate workmanship.

EMOZIONANTE SCENA D’ESTERNO, LA PREGHIERA DEGLI ZAMPOGNARI
DESCRIZIONE:
La letteratura romantica ha costruito l’immagine dello zampognaro vagabondo, musico di piazza, metà pastore, metà mendicante, secondo uno stereotipo consolidato che ancora resiste. Nella prima metà del XIX secolo già il compositore Hector Berlioz, nel 1832, ci rappresenta gli zampognari che
in prossimità del Natale, scendono dalle montagne a gruppi di 4 o 5, e vengono con zampogne e pifferi per dare pii concerti davanti alle immagini della Madonna.”
Così scrive Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) nelle sue memorie di un viaggio in Italia. Nella sua descrizione, lo straordinario musicista, sembra sussurrarci le parole più adatte a dipingere questa scena, espressioni che ognuno di noi userebbe per descrivere il ritratto che di loro conserva nella propria mente. Il piccolo dipinto in esame si pone come una vera e propria immagine devozionale e comunica l’ atmosfera che sono in grado di creare questi musicisti che con vera devozione suonano la tradizionale novena con la Zampogna, strumento antichissimo, le sue origini si perdono nella notte dei tempi, basti pensare che si ha notizia di strumenti ad essa simili già nella Bibbia e che Nerone si dilettava a suonare uno strumento munito di una sacca e di alcune canne sonore. La zampogna che oggi ancora si può trovare in tutta l’Italia centro-meridionale è il risultato di una evoluzione continua nei secoli. I segreti legati alla sua realizzazione ed alla pratica musicale sono stati gelosamente custoditi dalle famiglie di zampognari e tramandati oralmente tra le varie generazioni. Il dipinto in esame mostra uno scorcio di paesaggio montano con alte guglie rocciose una tipica rappresentazione di tratturi antichi che conducevano fino alle città per annunciare la nascita di Gesù Bambino. Due Zampognari, di età differente, si fermano ad una solitaria edicola, in cui s’intravede l’immagine della madonna, e realizzano la propria personale devota preghiera a suon di fiato e dolci note.

Il dipinto non è firmato, ma deve essere considerato una produzione di area belga; probabilmente l’artista dovette restare pienamente impressionato dalla figura dello zampognaro al punto di desiderare immortalarli in un dipinto di così delicata fattura.
