Description: Written on front "William Gordon - Uncle to the present / Duke of Gordon". William Gordon, Deputy Ranger of St Jame's Park. Born August 1744 son of Cosmo, 3rd Duke of Gordon. He married at Whitkirk, Yorks on 1st March 1781 Miss Frances Shepherd. He died 1st May 1823. Born Paddington 12 October 1768 (baptized St. James's, Paddington 30 October 1768), son of Henry Edridge, a tradesman in St. James's and his wife Sarah. Apprenticed under William Pether. Entered RA Schools 7 January 1784 'age 15 12 Oct. last', where he won the approval of Reynolds. Won Silver Medal 1786. Friends of Girtin and Hearne (with whom he made a number of sketching trips) and with Dr. Monro, Sir George Beaumont and J. Farington. Exhibited portraits and miniatures at RA (202) 1786-1821. Elected ARA 1820. Had a highly successful society practice. Among his sitters were William Pether, Admiral Sir Richard King, Duchess of Hamilton, T. Hearne, T. Stothard, James Heath, W. Woollett, R. Corbould, B. Pouncy, E.F. Burney, F. Bartolozzi, J. Nollekens, the Marquess of Lansdowne, William Pitt, Benjamin West, William Wordsworth and many members of the royal family. Visited France 1817 and 1819. Died London 23 April 1821. Buried Bushey churchyard. Produced a number of small full or three-quarter length drawings, with sitter often formally posed against a landscape background. They are generally done with black led pencil heightened by watercolour applied to the face and hands.
