Geoffrey Ellis was chairman of Sun Life Assurance Society from 1941-1950.
Born Auckland, New Zealand 31 March 1880, son of Hugh and Elizabeth Birley. Educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge before trainging in Dresden, Florence, Academie Julian, Paris (under M. Baschet) and St. John's Wood School of Art. Settled in London where he became a fashionable society portraitist. Exhibited at RA (64), RHA (5), RP (101), ROI, NPS, Paris Salon 1904-45. Elected VP of NPS. Enlisted in 10th Battalion Royal Fusiliers September 1914. In France with Intelligence Corps 1916-19 and Sussex Home Guard June 1940-3. In 1n 1943, while serving with the Sussex Home Guard, he lost the sight of an eye in a an accident when a weapon exploded. This did not prevent him painting. Among his sitters were Glyn Philpot, the Earl of Birkenhead, King George V and Queen Mary, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. Knighted 1949. Died London 6 May 1952. Buried West Dean Sussex.
