Description: Birmingham School of Jewellery and Silversmithing, which opened its doors in 1890, is the largest of its kind in Europe and one of the few specialist schools in the world. The school's first headmaster - Robert Catterson-Smith - came with references from the artists Edward Burne Jones, the potter William de Morgan and the painter, illustrator and writer Walter Crane. Distinguished jewellers and silversmiths who have been trained or taught at the school include Arthur and Georgina Gaskin, Bernard Cuzner and Ralph Baxendale. The Kelmscott Chaucer is "not only the most important of the Kelmscott Press's productions; it is also one of the great books of the world. Its splendour...can hardly be matched among the books of the time" (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England). With eighty-seven woodcut illustrations after Sir Edward Burne-Jones, redrawn by Robert Catterson-Smith and cut by W. H. Hooper. Woodcut title-page, 14 variously repeated woodcut borders, 18 variously repeated woodcut frames around illustrations, 26 nineteen-line woodcut initial words, numerous three-, six- and ten-line woodcut initial letters, and woodcut printer's device, all designed by William Morris and cut by C. E. Keates, W. H. Hooper, and W. Spielmeyer. Printed in black and red in Chaucer type, the titles of longer poems printed in Troy type. Double columns. Catterson-Smith also was a one-time Kelmscott craftsman and painted woodland landscapes. He exhibited seven works at the RA including 'In the Green Heart of a Wood' and 'Dreaming of Puffs-puffs', and six works at SS, including 'Brambles' and 'Alone but not Lonely'. Murray Bernard Blaydon , born in 1864 was a lanscape and portrait painter. He studied at the Birmingham School of Art, He was art master for the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts, 1896. R.B.S.A. 1918.
