Description:
Hubert Goltzius (1526-1583) was born in Venlo, Holland, into a family of artists, engravers and painters of German origin. In 1546 he moved to Antwerp and was active as a painter and antiques dealer. He was introduced by his friends in Antwerp to prominent numismatists, for whom he made drawings of coins and began a system of their classification. He undertook a trip in 1556 through the Netherlands and the Rhine Valley to continue his study of ancient coins. Beginning in 1557 and up until 1579, Goltzius continued to issue luxurious volumes. He considered medals as the very foundation of true history; and travelled through France, Germany, and Italy, in order to complete his collections. He was the author of several excellent works, in all of which he applies medals to the illustration of ancient history, and for the greater accuracy, had them printed in his own house, and corrected them himself. He also engraved the plates with his own hands. However, upon his death he left much of his work still unpublished. It was Jacob de Bie in Antwerp during the years 1617–1620 who gathered together the first collections of these works; Plantin’s press finally published five volumes of his Opera Omnia in 1644-1645.
