Description:
A exceptional pierced sterling silver napkin ring by Mappin & Webb. The hallmarks date it to London 1898. It is very rare to find napkin rings with the maker's marks from such a distinguished silversmith! It features a plain scalloped edge and an ornate design that is all hand engraved on the complex pierce work that makes up the pattern of this attractive piece. There is a very faint monogram in the cartouche - "Molly" perhaps? Pierced napkins for this type of exacting & painstaking detailwork and are thus highly prized and are much more rare than the solid ones. Napkin rings are very collectible and have enjoyed a recent revival due to the growing "green" trend, many people have resurrected the tradition of cloth napkins at the table - instead of using and disposing of paper napkins. Individual napkin rings are then placed at each place setting so that you know which is your napkin to reuse at the next meal. Pairs, sets of 4 & 6 are also available. Makes a great gift!
