Public Entrance and South Front of White House, Washington, D.C. The back reads, "The White House, Washington, D. C., the home of the President of the United States, is a substantial classic structure of Virginian free stone, 170 x 86 feet. Geo. Washington selected the site and laid the corner stone in 1792. The first President to occupy it was Jno. Adams in 1800. It was burned by the British in 1814 during President Madison's administration who occupied Octagon House, 18th and New York Aves., temporarily as the White House. After restoration is was paited white to obliterate all marks of the fire. The view here shown is of the east entrance which is used by the public who are admitted daily, and by guests invited to receptions and other State functions." Pub. by W. B.
