Description:
Rare Pair of Kilian Brothers Piano Lamps with polychrome
details
on the pedestal bases, Juno lamp tops, and serpentine hobnail shades
(electrified by previous owner). Antiques Magazine (May 1999) has an article by
Anna Tobin D'Ambrosio about the work of Kilian Brothers where the
pedestal bases are thoroughly described. Plate 1 on page 728 reads "The
pedestal
in Plate I exemplifies Kilian's stylistic predilections. The
uncomplicated body is composed
of stacked geometric forms bedecked with incised lines, a vivid
patette and metal
mounts. Light and dark surfaces, typical of neo-grec furniture, are
played against one
another for dramatic effect. Gilded and ebonized surfaces, accented
by red,
green and gold highlights, are enhanced by the warm tone of the
walnut. United
by chain swags, patinated putti mounts crown the extremities." The
lamps were
added to these pedestals and we feel this was a custom order for a
pair of unique
piano lamps. Further comments in the article explain the company's
willingness to adapt
to special requests as stated in "The use of interchangeable parts allowed
Kilian's to offer
the consumer the broadest number of choices." A choice pair of of
Victorian lighting!
