Description:
A Pair of Early 1700s Giltwood Candlestick Lamps Pair of Antique 18th C. Italian Giltwood Candlesticks- Mounted as Lamps at some point in their history – Black Marble Stylized, Triangular Shaped Bases with Red Felt – Found in France – Good Antique Condition Commensurate with Age – Loss of Gilding in Areas, chips- European Wiring This pair of tall giltwood Italian candlesticks, was probably originally used as church candlesticks. The backs were flat with no gilding, but did have a pale yellow bole(colored clay applied to the gesso for affixing gold leaf) applied to the back to seal the wood. Since they were placed at the altar, only the front of the candlesticks would be seen by the parishioners, so most often they would be the only part that was gilded. These magnificent candlesticks, from the late 1700’s, were made into lamps at some point in their history, with stylized, triangular shaped black marble bases and red felt added. You only need to add a shade of your choosing. Contact us for wiring or touch ups to gilding if desired. H=49 inches to top of bulb socket Base=11 1/8 x 6 7/8 Please contact us if you would like photos, video, or more information. Thank you, Le Louvre French Antiques
